Independent singer-songwriter Cam Pierce says Spotify has wrongly removed his album A Thousand Lonely Horses after accusing him of using artificial intelligence to boost his streams — a charge he vehemently denies.
In a fiery message to fans on Friday, Pierce described receiving an email from Spotify claiming their systems had detected “artificial streaming” on his account. The streaming giant pulled his album without warning, cutting off a key source of income while he’s in the middle of a grueling 15,000-mile tour across the United States.
“They’re using AI to rat out hardworking independent artists, claiming I’m paying for streams,” Pierce said. “I don’t buy anything — I don’t have enough money to buy anything. It’s just me, a broke artist in a beat-up Honda CR-V with 250,000 miles, trying to pay rent for me and my mom.”
Pierce, who has been playing sold-out shows in the western U.S., says his recent growth in streams is a result of those performances — not any shady tactics. He insists that he has “never bought a stream” and doesn’t even know who to contact to do so.
Meanwhile, Pierce accuses Spotify of a double standard:
“They’re in bed with major record labels running streaming farms to boost their own sales,” he alleged. “Every time you play a song on Spotify, artists are losing money. And now they’re taking $100 from me while I’m out here trying to survive.”
The singer’s frustration boils over into a call for legal action, urging entertainment lawyers, the ACLU, and fellow musicians to stand up to what he calls “corporate thugs” waging war on small independent artists.
“If Spotify got hit with 10,000 lawsuits in one week, maybe the news would start reporting on this,” Pierce said. “Maybe people would drop their streaming services, buy CDs again, or switch platforms.”
For now, A Thousand Lonely Horses is unavailable on Spotify, but Pierce promises the setback won’t stop him. He’s continuing his tour and preparing for a show Saturday night at Buck’s Barn Grill, channeling his frustration into his music.
“I’m ped. I’m on fire. We’re going to have one h of a show,” he said. “Let’s take this back. Love y’all. God bless. And tell these b****** to go f*** themselves.”
